FSX Gold edition comes on 3 disk, 2 for game, 1 for the expansion pack. It also has 2 cd keys, 1 for the game, 1 for the expansion pack. I can activate the cd key for the main game, but when I try to activate the expansion it just crashes and gives me an error message. I've been messing with it for 3 nights now and all I want to do is fly some planes. So I guess I'll just buy the Steam edition.

Click here. Well, you're at the right Registry entry, but if you only see those three entries, then that entry is corrupt. In my Registry, I have ten entries, with UpperFilters at the bottom. I don't want to suggest any tampering with the Registry as it could cause more harm than good.
You may want to first do a System scan which may put back any system files and correct entries. And Enter. This will scan your system, make corrections and give you the results at the end. Then go back to that Registry Entry and see whether there has been any change to it. Otherwise, I would still suggest uninstalling FSX completely, as directed in my earlier post on 11th Oct. I know it will be a nuisance especially that most of your present installation runs well, but that to me is the safest option.
Also, some have had problems reinstalling FSX in Win10 and even though there are fixes, you need to bear that in mind. Remember, if re-installing, it is preferable to install FSX in the root of your drive e. I did what you said sadly the scan didn't come up with anything still no upper filter , I completely uninstalled fsx to my understandings and re installed is,during the reinstall I don't believe it prompted me to here I wanted it installed.

So you then did a re-install of FSX: at the outset of the installation process it will ask whether FSX should be installed to the default location i. Program Files xxx. It is here that you can opt to install to another location. Therefore, after you've done the above, where do you now stand: is FSX without Acceleration installed and running on your System?
And the original problem in your Opening Post still stands? I'm afraid that the only fix for FSX and Acceleration activation is what I suggested above: amending the Registry entry. The fact that you are not seeing that particular entry is concerning and possibly an installation path problem.
You should have entries here for your installation and on mine there are five viz.
